Sergei Kalyanov

Cello

Born in 1968 into a musical family, he graduated from the Moscow P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory in 1992 and completed his postgraduate studies there in 1994. His teachers included Stefan Kalyanov, Natalia Shakhovskaya, Natalia Gutman, and Yevgeny Slobodkin. Since 1992, he has been a soloist with the Moscow State Philharmonic.

In addition to numerous concert tours across Russia, he has performed in England, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. He has played with symphonic and chamber orchestras under conductors such as Paavo Berglund, Iván Fischer, Karolos Trikolidis, and Yuri Simonov. He has appeared in prestigious venues including the Liszt Academy (Budapest), Victoria Hall (Geneva), Megaron (Athens), the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Hercules-Saal (Munich), and the Auditorium in Madrid.

He is also an avid chamber musician, having collaborated with Julian Milkis, Mikhail Petukhov, Nina Kogan, Marina Yashvili, Lyuba Timofeyeva, and Boris Berezovsky. He has recorded for Russian CD and Pavane Records.

Since 1995, he has been dedicated to teaching:

  • 1995–1997: Moscow Conservatory

  • 1997–1999: Music Academy in Győr (Hungary)

  • 1999–2001: Istanbul Conservatory (Turkey)

  • Since 2003: Music Academy in Lund (Sweden)

He has led masterclasses in Spain, Greece, Sweden, and Turkey.

As a conductor, he studied at the National University of Music in Bucharest (with Prof. D. Goya, graduated in 2002), and took masterclasses with Sir Georg Solti (USA) and Prof. Yuri Simonov (Hungary). He has conducted in Hungary, Denmark, Romania, Spain, and Turkey.
